In order to reach a place of financial freedom, you have to know your why. Why are you doing it? Why go through the hard work and frustration?
In any good action flick, the main character is faced with 90 minutes of obstacles. Multiple times it seems there’s no way out, he’s done for, and the credits are about to roll. However, there’s something inside that continues to push them forward and helps them ultimately succeed in the end.
What is it?
It’s their “why.” Why are they doing it? What are they trying to reach that makes these trials worth it? To rescue their true love, save the world from extinction, or avenge the death of a family member? There has to be something to remind them that the juice is worth the squeeze.
So when things get tough with your money, what is the thing that keeps you going? What’s your why?
What vs. Why
Imagine I took you into a field, handed you a shovel, and told you to start digging right where you were standing. That’s it; no more instructions.
You might start digging for a little while, but you’d eventually give up and walk away. Why waste the time and energy?
Now imagine the same scenario, but this time I tell you that there is $1 million buried eight feet below your feet. I’m willing to bet you reach that money before the sun sets.
What changed? You always knew what you were supposed to do (dig), you just needed to know why.
Find Your Why in Money
Simply saying “I want to get out of debt” or “I want to save more money” isn’t a good enough why. Dig deeper. Why do you want to be out of debt? How would you feel if you had more money in the bank?
Have some fun dreaming about your why. If you woke up tomorrow with no debt, what would you do? Vacation more? Go on a shopping spree? Donate to a church or organization?
Create a vision board or write a list of all of the things you dream about. Then, hang it up where you can see it regularly. This will be your motivation to keep going during those months where it all seems to fall apart, or when it feels like you’ll never get there.
